Section breaks in Microsoft Word are incredibly useful tools for managing diverse formatting styles within a single document. They allow you to separate text into different sections, each with its own unique layout, headers, footers, and page numbering.

Imagine you're creating a report that includes a title page, a table of contents, and multiple chapters—each with different formatting needs. Section breaks make this easy by allowing you to change the formatting in one section without affecting others.

Type of the Section Breaks

In Microsoft Word, section breaks are used to divide a document into sections, allowing you to apply different formatting or layout options to different parts of your document. There are several types of section breaks:

Section break options in Word

  • Next Page: This section break starts the new section on the next page. It's commonly used when you want to start a new chapter or a new area of your document.
  • Continuous: This section break starts the new section on the same page. This is useful for applying different formatting to different paragraphs or blocks of text within the same page.
  • Even Page: This type of section break ensures that the new section starts on the next even-numbered page. If the section break is inserted on an even page, Word will add a blank page.
  • Odd Page: Similar to the Even Page break, this one starts the new section on the next odd-numbered page. A blank page will be added if necessary to ensure the section starts on an odd page.

These section breaks allow for flexibility in document design, letting you change headers, footers, page layouts, and more within different sections of your document.

How to insert section breaks?

 

Supposing you want to change the page orientation from portrait to landscape from page 3, you should insert the section break by following steps below:

Step 1. Place your cursor in the end of the page 2
Step 2. Go to the Layout tab on the ribbon

Step 3. Click on Breaks, a dropdown menu will appear, choose Next Page

Now a section break has been inserted.

Step 4. Click Orientation under Layout tab, and click Landscape from the dropdown list

Now, from page 3, the orientation of the pages have been changed to landscape.

How to show section breaks?

Generally, section breaks are hidden by default. To view them, you need to enable the Show/Hide Editing Marks feature.

Click on Home tab, in the paragraph group, click on the Show/Hide Editing Marks button. This will display all formatting marks, including section breaks.

Note: Section breaks are visible in editing mode but will not appear on printed documents.

How to delete section breaks?

 

Click just before the section break to position the cursor. And then press Delete key to remove the section break.

Note: Excel only support deleting section breaks one by one manually.
